History

The Marlborough Hall is one of the jewels of Halifax! We are wanting to put together a history of this fantastic building - from its musical beginnings through to modern day skate parties and pantomines! E-mail us if you wish to include your history of Marlborough Hall...

The Crossley Street Grade II listed building was orginally the Mechanics Institute and was built in 1857.

The concert hall can hold 700 people.

Marlborough Hall was home to Halifax's first cinema - the Gem!

During World War Two Marlborough Hall was used as a canteen for the forces.

The YMCA took over the building in 1948 - before finding home at Marlborough Hall the YMCA was based from 1919 in Clare Hall, moving to new premises in Market Street in February 1936.

47,000 people a year use the building today and it is home to 26 different projects.
